Clowes, William

(1780–1851)
   Sect Founder.
Clowes was a native of Staffordshire. He was born into a drinking family, but was converted to Methodism and sobriety in 1805. However, because of his commitment to American-style camp meetings, he was expelled from the movement. His friends continued to support him as a preacher and, together with Hugh bourne, he founded the Primitive Methodist Connexion. He was an eloquent speaker and he devoted the rest of his life to spreading the Gospel in the Midlands and north of England.
